An Eye in the Fog. Three new photographers

This exhibition project presents the photographic work by three Cuban artists: Ezequiel O. Suárez, Leandro Feal, and Claudio Fuentes, who have been developing a photography type that, in my opinion, revives the national photographic panorama. When watching each one of their exhibits independently I notice that they open a different way, unusual perspectives, with a graceful and unprejudiced approach. And I use the word unprejudiced because, more than any other manifestation of the visual arts, it has been assumed that for doing photography it is required a solid technical mastery, and this notion engenders conventions, prejudices and damage. The artists think about making problematic themes in terms of composition and color, therefore, they discard white and black. (1)

Young people are insatiable. It´s still frequent to hear students and new graduates from the Instituto Superior de Arte regret for the establishment of very well know Cuban visual artists in the spaces created for the artistic exhibition and promotion of Cuban art instead of supporting the new generations. The shows El Reparto in the gallery Ciudades del mundo and Domesticación curated by an Art History student at Espacio aglutinador, the project Inventario that takes place on regular basis at the Fundación Ludwig de Cuba, Cubanos convertibles with curatorial work of Andrés D. Abreu and exhibited during the whole summer in Galería Habana, such as the photographic exhibition Un ojo en la niebla (a Rineke Dijkstra) in Casa de las Américas are several events of the contemporary cultural horizon that refute the original reasons of this grouse, at least in the last year and according to the schedule of visual arts shows in institutions from Havana.

The summer of Latin American photography

It seems that we are passing the times of "the most" ones. In this same space, we commented the recent opening in Montreal of a Cuban art exhibition, promoted as the most comprehensive that had ever transcended the borders of the Island to be shown in strange land. Now the Palais des Beaux Arts de Brussels, due to a combined effort of the Cervantes Institute and the Editorial Lunwerg, hosts Mapas Abiertos: fotografía contemporánea en América Latina (Open Maps: contemporary photography in Latin America); which will attract, between June 27 and September 14, visitors dazzled by a promotion that announces it as "the most complete ever carried out on artists, themes and trends of contemporary photography in South and Central America, and the Caribbean."
